Choosing the right size:

JuJu Menstrual Cup is available in four different models and each is a different size or shape. Model 1 is the smallest size and Model 4 is the widest. While there are no hard and fast rules for selecting a model size, model selection is generally based on childbearing history but many other factors such as age, anatomy and pelvic floor tone may also influence your cup size selection.

What size menstrual cup do I need?

Childbearing history, age, and cervical position all inform the size cup that a woman should use. Please bear in mind this is only a guide. Many people who have had children will still be able to successfully use a Model 1, and vice versa.

Model 1 Recommend if you are under 30 and have not given birth.

Model 2 Recommend if you are over 30 or have given birth, regardless of your age.

Model 3 Recommend if you have a high cervix or a long vaginal canal.

Model 4 Recommend if you have a low cervix or a short vaginal canal.

Other factors to consider when choosing a menstrual cup

1: Cervical Position

Your cervical position may also influence your selection of the model number and/or your ability to successfully use a menstrual cup. Your cervix may move at different stages of your cycle, so it’s a good idea to check your cervical position at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of your menstrual cycle to get a good understanding of your overall cervical position.

To determine your cervical height; thoroughly wash your hands, then insert your index finger into your vagina to locate your cervix. Your cervix is a bump, which feels a bit like the end of your nose, but is shaped like a donut. Thoroughly wash your hands after performing this examination.

If you consistently feel your cervix sitting just inside the vaginal opening or when you have only inserted the tip of your finger up to your ‘first knuckle’ (or the bend in your finger just below your fingernail), you most likely have a low cervix and a Model 4 JuJu cup is the best menstrual cup for low cervix.

The Model 4 JuJu cup is best menstrual cup for a low cervix as it has a shorter body and stem when compared with other JuJu Models. Please only choose this model if you are sure you have a low cervix or short vaginal canal throughout your cycle as the removal of this cup may be more difficult if you have a normal to high cervix. If your cervix tends to move around quite a bit during different stages your period, you may find a Model 4 is suitable for you at the start of your cycle, when your cervix is low, and a Model 2 is better towards the middle and end of your menstrual cycle when the cervix may sit a little higher. In most cases, the Model 4 JuJu cup is not recommended for young girls or virgins.

If you are unable to reach your cervix or need to insert your finger past the middle bend in your finger before you can feel your cervix, you most likely have a high cervix and may like to consider the Model 3 JuJu cup. The Model 3 JuJu cup has a longer body, which makes it the best menstrual cup for a high cervix and long vaginal canal as removal is easier.

More detailed information can be found on our Cervical Position page.

Medium cervix

If you have a medium height cervix, select either the Model 1 or Model 2 based on your childbearing history and age as detailed above.

High cervix

If you are unable to reach your cervix or need to insert your finger past the middle bend in your finger before you can feel your cervix, you most likely have a high cervix and may like to consider the Model 3 JuJu Cup. The Model 3 JuJu Cup has a longer body, which makes removal easier for people with a high cervix and longer vaginal canal.

Low cervix

If you consistently feel your cervix sitting just inside the vaginal opening or when you have only inserted the tip of your finger up to your ‘first knuckle’ (or the bend in your finger just below your fingernail), you most likely have a low cervix and a Model 4 JuJu Cup may be the most suitable for you. The Model 4 JuJu Cup is better suited to shorter vaginal canals as it has a shorter body and stem when compared with other JuJu Models. Please only choose this model if you are sure you have a low cervix throughout your cycle as the removal of this cup may be more difficult if you have a normal to high cervix.  If your cervix tends to move around quite a bit during different stages your period, you may find a Model 4 is suitable for you at the start of your cycle, when your cervix is low, and a Model 2 is better towards the middle and end of your menstrual cycle when the cervix may sit a little higher. In most cases, the Model 4 JuJu Cup is not recommended for young girls or virgins due to increased diameter.

2: Age

A Model 1 JuJu cup is generally recommended for women under 30 years of age who have not given birth and a Model 2 generally recommended for women over the age of 30 regardless of childbearing history.

Some women experience a loss of pelvic floor tone due to hormonal changes and/or age. If this is the case, a Model 2 may be a preferred choice. A Model 4 should be considered if there is a loss of pelvic floor tone in conjunction with a low cervix.

3: Adolescents

A Model 1 is recommended for adolescents whiles a Model 3 is recommended for adolescents with a high cervix/long vaginal canal.

4: Pelvic Floor Tone and Exercise

If you have good pelvic floor tone, practice regular Kegel exercises or other activities, such as Pilates, yoga or dance, you may wish to consider a Model 1 regardless of your childbearing history and age. The Model 1 is also recommended if you have had corrective surgery, such as vaginoplasty or perineoplasty.

The Model 3 is recommended for a with strong pelvic floor tone and a high cervix.

If you have lost some pelvic floor tone and have a low cervix, you may wish to consider a Model 4. As a general rule, the Model 4 should only be chosen if you are confident with removing a menstrual cup and are sure you have a low cervix.

It’s important to remember that whilst menstrual cups work for most people, there is a small minority who may find a cup simply doesn’t work for them or they may find one brand of cup works better for their anatomy than another.
